What types of black ants are found in Quebec?

The pavement ant (small black ant)

It typically measures between 2 and 4 mm. It often seeps in through basement cracks or door seals in search of sugary or fatty foods. Although annoying, it causes no structural damage.

The carpenter ant (large black ant)

This is the one that should alert you. It measures between 6 and 25 mm (much larger). Contrary to popular belief, it doesn’t eat the wood, but it digs galleries in it to build its nest, which weakens the structure of your house in the long term.

Signs that prove black ants have moved into your home

A lone black ant is often a scout. However, certain signs confirm the presence of a nest inside:

Fine sawdust

If you find small piles of sawdust near your baseboards, window frames, or in the basement, it’s a classic sign of an active carpenter ant nest.

Black winged ants in winter or spring

The presence of winged ants inside the house indicates that a mature colony is hidden in your walls and is trying to reproduce.

A nighttime activity

Large black ants are particularly active at night. If you hear faint scratching noises in the walls, the nest is active.
